Time Zone Abbreviations Explained

Time zone abbreviations are convenient, but they can be ambiguous. A three-letter label is not always enough for reliable scheduling.

Common ambiguity

CST can mean Central Standard Time in North America, China Standard Time or Cuba Standard Time depending on context. IST can mean India Standard Time, Irish Standard Time or Israel Standard Time.

Safer alternative

For calendars, software and international work, use IANA time zones such as America/New_York, Europe/London or Asia/Kolkata. These names include daylight saving rules.

Practical rule

If the meeting matters, write the city and date. Tuesday 10:00 New York time is clearer than Tuesday 10:00 EST during transition periods.
